With this square-format work, Medsan drops Ghost in the Shell’s Major Motoko Kusanagi (攻殻機動隊, Masamune Shirow's manga, Mamoru Oshii's film, 1995) into a nocturnal alley saturated with signs. The vertical red box at the top right displays the original franchise title in kanji, a discreet signature of the cited world. The cyborg faces away from us, wired to the city by a spray of wires that erupt from the nape of her neck and blend with the electricity lines of the neighborhood.

The treatment blends a dense painted material — dull impastos of violet, indigo, magenta and leaden green for the drenched façades — with a network of fine gold lines that redraw posts, cables, sign-frame structures and the contours of the body, in a lacquer-maki-e logic applied to the megapolis. This gold line functions as an urban kintsugi: it highlights the joints rather than masking them. At the center of the back, the shell opens onto a nebula of blues, pinks and points of light, the only deep light fragment in an otherwise nocturnal palette. The corridor perspective, closed by the buildings and horizontally barred by cables, traps the silhouette at the vanishing point.

The mashup says the essence of the original story: the body is a shell, and what escapes it is neither blood nor circuits but cosmology. The threads that link her to the network keep her upright as much as they dissolve her, an exact image of the franchise’s central question — what remains of the self when consciousness plugs in. The city, for its part, continues to light up its signs without looking at them.

A nocturnal and magnetic piece, ideal for bringing a cyberpunk and contemplative touch to the interior of a collector devoted to Japanese science fiction.
