With this square-format work, Medsan brings Pikachu, mascot of the Pokémon franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, into the vocabulary of medieval stained glass. The electric creature leaves the Game Boy screen to occupy the space reserved for saints in Gothic glass, a yellow lightning bolt brandished like a sacred attribute. The cartouche メドサン, placed at the bottom right, signs the piece as if it were an atelier seal.

The treatment faithfully follows the grammar of stained glass: a network of thick black leadlines slicing each color strip, opaque stained glass with irregular transparencies, grisaille painted with a brush for the fur hachures and the facial modeling. The iron lattice bars cross the composition diagonally, as on a glass panel actually installed in a bay. The palette blends deep blues and emerald greens inherited from Chartres and the Sainte-Chapelle, while the silver yellows and ruby reds concentrate the light on the body and the lightning bolt. The cracks in the glass and oxidation specks give the whole piece a patina of ancient stained glass, more restored than new.

The mashup says something precise about our era: the icons we worship today are no longer hagiographic but playful, and the stained glass — medieval technology of the luminous image, ancestor of the backlit screen — here returns to its primary function of transmitting a collective story. The stern, frontal gaze of the character, far from the smiling mascot, emphasizes this assumed gravity. The glass breakage recalls that popular pantheons age as well.

A luminous and highly graphic piece, ideal for bringing a touch that is both sacred and pop to a contemporary interior of a collector attached to the bridges between heritage and video game culture.
