Description from the seller
Vintage Mid-20th Century Bulgarian Carved Wooden "Bukliya" Flask with Fruit Carvings & Humorous Folk Toasts (Circa 1950s–1980s)
Description
Bring a touch of rustic Balkan folk heritage to your collection with this charming vintage turned-wood pilgrim flask, traditionally known as a bukliya or ploska. Crafted during the mid-to-late 20th century, this decorative vessel was historically used to serve and celebrate wine or rakia during festive village gatherings and traditional weddings.
This piece is entirely handmade by skilled folk artisans utilizing traditional woodworking techniques. The construction features a multi-segment stave perimeter built from contrasting hardwoods, while the central motifs and raised Cyrillic lettering are meticulously hand-carved in high relief:
Side A depicts a lush, plump cluster of grapes beside a detailed vine leaf, bordered by a playful Cyrillic folk inscription translating to: "Whoever doesn't drink wine, he is a sensible man — incredible, but a fact" (a witty spin on a classic poet's verse).
Side B displays a carved cluster of ripe stone fruits (plums) hanging beneath foliage, encircled by a traditional rhyming toast: "Drink rakia, eat plums, watch life be beautiful".
Complete with a matching turned wooden stopper, integrated brass display feet on the base, and its original woven textile carrying strap, this piece serves as a fantastic standalone decorative object or a unique barware display.
