A decorative wall bird cage dating to the late 19th century (approximately 1880–1900), made of wood in the Netherlands, measuring about 68 cm high, 44 cm wide and 23 cm deep, weighing around 3 kg, in good used condition with minor signs of aging, featuring green floral decorations with oxblood red and white dots in a Hindeloopen/Victorian style.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful and decorative bird cage. It concerns a wall cage (semi-round with a flat back) that was specially made to hang against a wall or stand. The cage is 68 cm high, about 44 cm wide, 23 cm deep and weighs almost 3 kg.
The cage probably dates from the late 19th century, and you could call the style 'Late Victorian'.
What is special about the cage is that on both sides flowers are painted in green colors, with oxblood red and white dots. You could call this Hindeloopen style, but these paintings were applied around 1900 across the Netherlands to furniture and objects like this.
Very beautiful is also the way the cage is constructed. The semicircular uprights come together very neatly at the top in a kind of knop, and on the way down they are connected by rectangular side pieces. The iron bars are threaded through holes in the connecting pieces, and are kept in place with thin wire-tying wire (see photos). You could call it folk art, but carried out by a very skilled craftsman!
Part of the bottom, which can also be folded open to clean the cage (see photos), is clad with metal (probably zinc) (see photos).
The cage is still in particularly good condition. The painting is hardly affected and all the wood is still in the original varnish. The iron bars are still in place and the drop doors work perfectly and close exactly as intended. It is a particularly beautiful specimen, in which birds can still be kept, but which is also extremely decorative.
The bird cage is carefully packed and insured for shipment.
