Description

The work is extensively illustrated throughout with photographs, diagrams, sectional drawings and highly detailed engineering illustrations. Particularly impressive are the numerous large folding plates, several of which open to considerable size and show locomotives and their mechanical components in remarkable technical detail.
The subjects covered include steam locomotive construction, wheel arrangements, boilers and fireboxes, cylinders, valves, compound systems, frames and chassis, driving mechanisms, boiler fittings, maintenance and practical operation.
Of particular interest are the spectacular folding engineering drawings, including large sectional and construction diagrams of locomotives and their internal mechanisms, some printed in colour.
The set also contains a separate loose technical drawing, which has been preserved between the volumes and is included with the lot.
