Beautiful sixteenth-century edition of the only surviving work by the Latin writer entirely devoted to Emperor Tiberius. The work is a vast collection of anecdotes arranged around virtues, institutions and customs, intended to celebrate the Roman ethical code and the greatness of Rome. Beautiful period binding in boar-leather. Dry-point engravings on the plates with an allegory of Justice depicted as a woman holding a sword and a balance. Spine with raised bands. Printer’s device on the title page. The binding bears in pen the date 1639, but the edition is from 1581. The last pages of the index are missing, but the text is absolutely complete. Dimensions: 13 x 8 cm; pages: 22 leaves of prelims, 555, 141, 15 leaves. Excellent condition.
