Emil Frische was born in Düsseldorf in 1872, into a family closely linked to the art world. He was the son of the landscape painter Heinrich Ludwig Frische and trained at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he studied under Claus-Meyer. His known production includes genre scenes, interiors, portraits and still lifes, and his artistic activity in the early decades of the 20th century is also documented. Specialized market sources record several Frische works that have appeared at auction.

The painting is integrated within the tradition of the Düsseldorf School, characterized by a special attention to landscape, genre scenes and the observation of everyday life. Frische is also listed among the artists historiographically linked to that school.
