Justus Christian Loder is the author and illustrator of Anatomische Tafeln I. Band. Taf. I - XC, an illustrated German edition on leather binding spanning 97 pages dating from 1794.
Description from the seller
This historical volume represents the monumental first volume (Band I, covering Osteology and Myology) of the famous medical work "Tabulae Anatomicae", compiled by the celebrated German anatomist and physician Justus Christian Loder (1753–1832). Published in Weimar between 1794 and 1803, this atlas is universally recognized as one of the grandest and most visually sophisticated anatomical works of the late Enlightenment. While the formal numbering runs up to plate 90, this complete portfolio physically contains a total of 96 full-page engraved plates. This expanded count is due to a unique feature between plates Tab. XXVI and Tab. XXXI, where each subject is divided into two separate sheets: one fully shaded artistic engraving and a second matching outline schematic with medical reference keys. Given the grand folio scale and historical importance, this complete first volume is a rare find for serious collectors.
In terms of provenance, this copy is exceptionally valuable due to an ownership stamp on the title page: „BIBLIOTHEK Wenzel Gruber Anatomisches Institut der k. k. deutschen Universität Prag". This indicates that the book historically belonged to the library of the prominent Czech -Austrian anatomist and professor Wenzel (Václav) Gruber (1814–1890), or to the collection of the Prague university institute at the time.
Bibliographical Details:
The masterfully executed copper engravings were drawn directly from actual dissections and engraved by the prominent artist Ernst Christian Gottlieb Müller and his workshop. The prints are presented on heavy, thick period paper with exceptionally wide margins, showcasing a thorough academic deep dive into human bone composition and multi-layered musculature. Loder’s atlas is highly praised by medical historians for its clinical accuracy and revolutionary paired layout. This copy functions as a highly valuable standalone visual record of major anatomical regions. The atlas is produced in a grand folio format, making it a visually striking centerpiece for any fine historical or scientific library.
List of Plates
The volume contains 96 original engraving plates in total, spanning the complete sequence up to Tab. LIV and beyond to the end of the first section. The initial segment focuses closely on osteology, showing detailed views of the human skull, vertebrae, rib cage, and extremities. The portfolio then transitions into advanced myology, illustrating full-body muscular layouts from frontal, posterior, and profile angles, including the rare paired outline sheets between plates 26 and 31. The final sequences explore the intricate pathways of ligaments, major joints like the knee and hip, the nervous system of the neck, and specialized texture studies of human tissue.
Condition
Period leather binding with gilding along the edges and a decorated spine; scuffed edges and surface, with damage to the top part of the spine; some plates show foxing spots, but overall the content is in very good and nice condition – all as seen in the photos.
