Description of the work
Art edition in ten volumes in octavo (21 × 14 cm) published between 1971 and 1972 by Éditions Jean de Bonnot. Full red calf binding, hand-assembled, smooth spine adorned with titles and gold tooling, with the author’s portrait in a false title piece on black backgrounds. Cold-stamped covers with floral and arabesque motifs, gilded top edges, headbands and silk bookmarks. The interior comprises about 400 pages per volume, printed on watermarked laid paper, enriched with frontispieces, headpieces, initials, tailpieces and numerous black-and-white engravings from the Neo-Romantic school. All ten volumes in perfect condition, fresh bindings, firm spines, bright gilding, clean interiors, minor defects in volume 8, without annotations or foxing.

The Work
This superb edition gathers the complete novels and stories of Stendhal, texts carefully revised by Jacques Haumont. The distribution is as follows: volumes 1–2 Le Rouge et le Noir, 3–4 La Chartreuse de Parme, 5–6 Lucien Leuwen (unfinished), volume 7 Lamiel, volumes 8–9 “Romans et nouvelles” (notably Armance, Le Rose et le Vert, Nina de Vanghel…), and volume 10 Chroniques italiennes (with Vittoria Accoramboni, La Duchesse de Palliano, Vanina Vanini, etc.). Stendhal (1783–1842), master of the French Romantic novel, excels in the psychological portrayal of his heroes—in search of love, ambition and identity—and relentlessly pursues his quest for the “truth, the harsh truth” in works such as Le Rouge et le Noir, La Chartreuse de Parme and the Italian tales.
