AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Neo-classical, this set of three pieces in Wedgwood blue Jasperware elegantly illustrates the permanence of the decorative repertoire of the factory at the beginning of the 1970s. Made in England, it consists of two covered boxes and a decorative plaque, all characterized by the contrast between the matte blue background and the white relief appliques. The markings “WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND” accompanied by the numbers 72 and 73 allow us to place production respectively in 1972 and 1973.

The first box, slightly shaped in a contour-cut form, is adorned on its lid with a high-relief mythological group featuring winged figures and a horse; its sides are punctuated by scenes of putti, framed by stylized vegetal motifs. The second, circular in shape, presents on its body a abundant frieze of leaves and grape clusters, while its lid receives a crown of foliage and a cobalt blue knob enhanced by radiant white motifs. The circular plaque in turn repeats a laurel crown surrounding a bas-relief showing a fortified edifice.

The set is in excellent condition. The Jasperware surfaces have preserved their beautiful matte finish and the applied reliefs are crisp and well preserved. No chips, cracks or restoration are visible in the photographs. Some minimal traces related to age may be noted, without altering the overall appearance of the pieces.

Founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, the manufacturer established itself thanks to its research into ceramic pastes and notably the development of Jasperware from the 1770s. This fine stoneware paste, unglazed and generally matte, became one of Wedgwood’s signatures, pairing colored grounds with white reliefs inspired by classical antiquity. In the early 1970s, this tradition remained fully integrated into the factory’s production, which thus continues an elaborated decorative language dating back nearly two centuries.
