About the work:
Direct homage to the famous American photographer of jazz giants, “In the manner of Herman Leonard” reinterprets in paint the silvered black-and-white aesthetics and chiaroscuro. Exhibited in January 2026 at the Centre Pagaret in Rémire-Montjoly as part of the exhibition “I am from Guyana,” this 60 × 50 cm canvas plunges the viewer into the hushed atmosphere of a carnival orchestra in Guyana, capturing a bassist absorbed in his playing, hat cocked on his head and a cigarette at the corner of his lips. The paint texture in impasto on the face contrasts with the bright lines and reflections on the electric bass. An intimate, nocturnal work, paying a vibrant tribute to music and the carnival scene.
