Statue, St Roch - 27 cm - Porcelain

A beautiful porcelain statue of St. Roch. His hagiography tells that Rochus was born in Montpellier. He was the only son of Joannes and Libera, whom he lost when he was 20 years old. As soon as he could, he gave his inherited fortune to the poor and left on foot in 1317 for Rome. Along the way he nursed the sick, preferably plague victims, and soon gained fame, because he cured some by making the Sign of the Cross over them. On the return journey he himself was infected by the plague in Piacenza. In iconography he is therefore often depicted with an open leg. He withdrew into a forest and was healed there by an angel. Made of porcelain at the end of the nineteenth century. In beautiful authentic condition. Height 27 cm.
