"In Undressed, Mario Testino strips away a few layers. In parallel with the exhibition designed exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, this intimate series explores the notion of nudity in photography while unveiling Testino’s archives, through shots that transcend the photographer’s image and public posture to allow a deeper understanding of his practice and body of work.

The 50 presented photographs focus on body nakedness: they explore and test, in turn, the traditions and boundaries relating to sexuality, gender identity, and fashion. Also paying homage to the influence of Helmut Newton, these shots turn into abstract body landscapes, the protagonists appearing as pure forms – a bust, a statue.

A highlight of the series, the previously unpublished studio shots at Testino’s studio, where an exuberant atmosphere reigns, full of the thrill provoked by nudity and a teasing, mischievous romantic fervor that never slides into the obscene or pornographic.

Testino’s models are varied, from models like Kate Moss and Amber Valletta to anonymous androgynous men, photographed individually or in groups. Many intimate moments are captured, sometimes candid, sometimes carefully orchestrated, such as this young man shaving the top of a woman’s pubic hair in a luxurious bathroom. In the vein of SIR, many of these photos can be interpreted as redefining masculine codes, just as Newton defined his own beauty of the feminine form.
