San Michele Arcangelo, an original hand-signed tempera icon on a 30 × 40 cm wooden panel from Italy, by M. Palumbo (XX) in the classical Byzantine-inspired style, dating to 2026 with period 2020+, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
We propose a work of rare spiritual intensity and excellent artisanal craftsmanship: an icon depicting Saint Michael the Archangel, created according to the most rigorous and ancient canons of Byzantine iconography.
The work is hand-painted on a wooden panel measuring 30 x 40 cm, prepared with the , following the ancient egg tempera technique. This technique gives the colors a depth, luminosity, and resistance to time that are unique, typical of the great eastern painting tradition.
Details of the work:
Subject: The Prince of the Celestial Militia, Saint Michael, is portrayed facing forward, in a solemn and austere pose. He wears a red mantle (the color of imperial power and martyrdom), richly draped, fastened by a circular fibula. In his right hand he wields a sword, symbol of his role as defender of the faith, while his gaze is fixed and penetrating. The wings are spread and majestic, and the head is crowned by a golden halo and a blue ribbon.
Inscriptions: As tradition, the icon bears inscriptions in ancient Greek identifying the subject: on the left, the letters "Ѡ А҃Р" (abbreviation of O Archistrategos, The Supreme Chief); on the right, "МІХАИЛ" (Michael).
The Artist and the School: The icon was executed by a master icon painter originally from Monte Sant’Angelo, a symbolic place of the Michaelite cult in the West. The artist perfected his training by obtaining the title of iconographer at the prestigious Abbey of Pulsano, a monastic center of ancient spirituality and cradle of an important iconographic tradition. The work thus unites the technical wisdom learned at Pulsano with the devotion rooted in its place of origin.
Unique Spiritual Value: This icon is not merely a work of art, but a deeply devotional object. It was solemnly blessed in the Celestial Cave, the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel in Monte Sant’Angelo, a sacred place consecrated by the Archangel himself. A fragment of stone from the Cave will accompany the icon as a tribute, sealing the bond with the holy place.
Condition: The work is in excellent condition, new and never exhibited, ready to be placed in a corner of prayer or in a sacred art collection.
A unique piece of extraordinary historical, artistic, and devotional value, destined for those who seek the authenticity and beauty of the iconographic tradition.
