Description from the seller

Monumental impressionistic seascape was created by important German Andreas (Andreas Carl Nicolaus) Dirk (1865 Sylt - 1922 Duesseldorf ). He studied: several years KGS Hamburg Markussen (decorative painting); 1885/86 KA Düsseldorf with Heinrich Lauenstein! Hugo Crola and Adolf Schill ; after stay in Hamburg 1887-93 Großherzog Art School in Weimar with Leopold von Kalckreuth and Theodor Hagen; 1916 Prof. Debuted in 1888 at the International Exhibition in the Munich glass-PAL. with the com. North frieze. Village Road. 1895 finally returned to Düsseldorf, where he was spezialized on marine and maritime painting. Worked regularly, especially during the summer months, in his studio of Sylt. Study trips took him 1894/95 to Belgium and the Netherlands, 1904 to Lake Constance, in 1907 in SW Africa and 1908 in the United States (New York), where he dabbled with Niagara motifs on the U.S. art market to establish. Befriended the North German writers Iven Kruse and Detlev von Liliencron, in Düsseldorf with the art historian Richard Klapheck, as well as the painters August Deusser, Erich Nikutowski and Erwin Günter. Dirk was member of artist union Laetitia in Duesseldorf, 1895-1910 of the artist union Malkasten, in 1905 of the Art Association Düsseldorf; founded the secessionist St.Lucas club with Deusser. 1903 Exhibitions-Association Düsseldorf.

Exhibitions and Prices: in1907 Great Golden State-Med., Vienna. -D. is considered "most powerful artistic talent" of the island of Sylt and the most important after Andreas Achenbach marine painter of the Düsseldorf school around 1900. D. found his motives (deep sea, coastal and island Lsch.) especially when driving on the North Sea (Schleswig-Holstein. West Coast, North frieze. Islands and Halligen). He painted old fishing ports and harbour scenes. Except for oils, watercolours and sketch books and independent drawings (pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink). Marked by the plein-air painting of his teacher Theodor Hagen, D. initially painted with broken heavy dark-toned colors. As Impressionist, D. used later increasingly lighter colors that he sometimes wore on with brush and scraper, sometimes directly from the tube in valeurreicher increments. Virtuoso dramatization and tekton. The mostly blue-grey or beige-tone tuned label image order and through strong rötl. Local colors accentuated seascapes. The sketchy style reminiscent of Giovanni Segantini. The contemporary impressed as compared to the wilhelmin. Marine painting artists. Ambition and original power of his images. The excessive demand of the art market in the late work of to experienced and steady production sedicted D. without motive.
