The Spirit of the 19th Century

Signed drawing on original paper by the famous Italian painter Eugenio Gignous (1850–1906), leader of Lombard Naturalism and a prominent figure in 19th-century landscape painting. Born in Milan to a father of French origin, he studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. Initially close to the Milanese Scapigliatura circles, he devoted himself entirely to en plein air landscape painting. He is best known for his poetic views of Lake Maggiore, Stresa, the Mottarone, the Val d'Ossola, and the Lagoon of Venice.

Nato a Milano da padre di origine francese, ha studiato all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. Inizialmente vicino agli ambienti della Scapigliatura milanese, si è dedicato interamente alla pittura di paesaggio en plein air. È celebre soprattutto per le sue poetiche vedute del Lago Maggiore, di Stresa, del Mottarone, della Val d'Ossola e della Laguna di Venezia.
