Description from the seller
BELGIAN SCHOOL - FLEMISH SCHOOL - LATEMSE SCHOOL
SCHELCK, Maurits (Maurice).
Born Aalst 1901 and died Gent 1978.
Excerpt from PIRON, Part 2, Page 404:
Painter. He trained at the Aalst Academy under A. Ysabey (1916-1923), a pupil of Herman Richir in Brussels. In 1931 he refined his technique in the "open studios" of Paris. He began his career in a traditional figurative style. He received the "Young Belgian Painter" prize in 1925 and the Godecharle prize in 1931. In 1926 he founded the artists’ association "Nieuw Leven" (New Life) in Aalst and taught there from 1927 to 1934. He stayed a while in Brussels and traveled to Germany and Italy from 1933 to 1935. In 1935 he interrupted his promising artistic career to develop other professional activities. In the early fifties he returned to painting and began making abstract works. In 1961 he settled in Deurle and in 1962 permanently in Sint-Martens-Latem. Also in 1961 he rejected abstraction in favor of a powerful and exuberant expressionist painting style, using a vivid color palette: landscapes, rural scenes, farm work, fishing scenes, still lifes, flowers, figures and portraits. Although his works reveal the influence of the “second” Latem group, he has always been a completely independent figure within Flemish painting and his work possesses a very personal eloquence. Works by him are in the museums of Antwerp and Deurle and in many private collections.
Listed in BAS I, Benezit, Arto and Piron.
This work dates from the 1960s and has the title "LANDSCAPE IN LATEM". It is an oil on panel and is framed in a frame dating from that period. The panel itself measures 80 by 100 centimeters and the frame 105.5 by 126 centimeters. Weight 15 kilograms. The work can be hung as is; however the FRAME is a complimentary GIFT to the auction!
The work comes from private possession and was acquired at a public auction in 1970. To substantiate: on the back of the work there is still the original auction sticker; see photo. The “stains” visible in the photos on the golden edges of the frame are a reflection. The frame is virtually perfect!
The authenticity of the work is furthermore guaranteed!
For verification of the signature I refer you to "Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists" by Paul PIRON, pages 522 and 523.
DUE TO SIZE AND WEIGHT IT IS PREFERABLE TO ARRANGE REMOVAL IN ILMEN (INGELMUNSTER) AFTER A CATALOGUE-CAUTION-MAIL AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS.
