A seated woman is shown in profile to the right, with a head inclined downward and hands brought together above a green textile. She wears a light blouse with a high closed collar and wide sleeves. The dark hair is styled up. The figure is placed in an interior, against a predominantly dark brown background in which a few vertical and horizontal elements are suggested. At the bottom a light horizontal strip runs, on which a small cylindrical object lies to the left. The signature is at the top right and is executed in orange-red paint.

Technique and material analysis

The scene is executed in oil on a wooden panel. The paint handling varies from thin, transparent passages in the background to more opaque and locally emphasized brushstrokes in the blouse, the face, the hands and the green textile. The brushwork remains recognisable in several places. A fine craquelure pattern runs over the surface. The surface impression is slightly glossy.

Composition and form analysis

The figure is placed left of center and occupies most of the vertical picture plane. The bent head, the forearms and the hands form a downward movement toward the green textile at lower right. The dark background contrasts with the light blouse and the illuminated face. Warm brown, ocher and red tones determine the surroundings, while white, light blue and green function as color accents. The spatial rendering is primarily built up through overlapping, tonal differences and a few sparsely indicated interior lines.

Stylistic and art historical context

The work aligns with a realistic figurative painting style in which an everyday action is central. The recognizable depiction of figure and interior is combined with a loose, locally broad brushwork. The strong chiaroscuro and the emphasis on the curved posture and concentrated hand movement structure the composition without elaborate detailing of the surroundings.
