japanese ceramic incense burner created by masami kobayashi (小林政美), a ceramic artist associated with kasama ware, one of japan’s well-known pottery traditions.
the work has a sculptural rounded form with a textured grey-brown surface. the lid is decorated with an expressive raised motif highlighted with gold-toned detailing, while an additional small gold-toned decorative element appears on the body.
the contrast between the restrained earthy ceramic surface and the metallic accents gives the piece a distinctive contemporary japanese aesthetic.
the incense burner separates into two sections and has a spacious interior for holding incense. an opening at the top allows the fragrance and smoke to escape.
