European lacquered chinoiserie commode in black with gilt detailing, circa 18th century, of wood, with two drawers and cabriole legs, measuring 62 cm wide, 68 cm high, and 38 cm deep, dating from Germany.
Description from the seller
European lacquered commode, chinoiserie, probably southern Germany
An elegant, black-lacquered and gilded chinoiserie commode with two drawers, executed in a graceful, Rococo-inspired form.
The piece is richly decorated with refined chinoiserie landscapes in warm gold- and ochre-tones against a deep black background. The drawer fronts, the scalloped lower edge, the sides and the cabriole legs are adorned with a continuous motif of pavilions, garden architecture, stylized trees, birds, figures in traditional dress, latticework and rocky landscapes. This creates a particularly lively and decorative whole. Some landscape elements are subtly embossed, adding extra depth and texture to the depiction.
The rectangular, profiled top rests above two full-width drawers. Both drawers are fitted with an old lock and a round knob. The gracefully shaped lower edge flows smoothly into four elegantly curved cabriole legs, which are also decorated with gilded floral motifs.
The commode has a beautifully lived-in surface, with natural wear, craquelé, localized loss of gilding and lacquer, and signs of use around the edges, drawer profiles, knees and feet. These traces of age and use greatly contribute to the character and authenticity of the piece and have deliberately not been restored.
The drawers are made of solid wood and have, on the inside, an appealing warm patina. The overall design reflects the long-standing European fascination with Chinese decorative art and combines Western furniture proportions with a rich, hand-painted chinoiserie decoration.
A atmospheric and highly decorative piece of furniture that can be excellently used as a side table, nightstand, hall furniture, or as a characterful accent in a contemporary interior.
