Description from the seller
High-quality signed genre painting from 1894 by Louis Lampe (1840–after 1898) with intriguing signed back.
Visually and art-historically, it is a very fascinating 19th-century painting. The back is a work of art in itself and a wonderful example of a painted cartellino (an illusionistic note) in trompe-l'œil style.
This atmospheric painting exudes an oasis of calm, elegance, and serene nostalgia. A young woman in a flowing, 19th-century white dress rests gracefully on a luxurious red chaise longue. Her posture radiates pure relaxation as she fully engages in her delicate handiwork. Large, French-style windows visually bring the lush, sun-drenched green garden inside. The soft daylight glides beautifully over her dress, highlighting the rich textures of the fabrics. At her feet, a playful black-and-white cat with a ball of wool provides a lively and charming detail in the composition.
The artwork is enhanced by a deep royal purple-velvet mat and a monumental gilded wooden frame that complete the classical look.

Louis Lampe (1840, Ledeberg – after 1898) was a Belgian painter who in the 19th-century art world was especially known for his refined genre scenes (scenes from daily life).
He came from an artistic family. His father was the painter Jean-Baptiste Lampe (1812–1888) and his brother Jean Lampe (1853–1919) was also a painter.
Lampe studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and spent much of his life working in Brussels. From 1866, when he was still a student, until 1881 Louis Lampe exhibited at twelve Belgian Triennales, as well as at the 1876 World’s Fair in Philadelphia.
As an art technical expert, Lampe carried out important restorations on masterpieces of the 17th-century Flemish Baroque painter Gaspard de Crayer. He restored, among others, four paintings in St. Peter’s Church in Opwijk (1893).
Diverse museums own works by Lampe, including the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, which possesses the painting “Un enfant endormi sur les genoux de sa mère” (1878).
