With this vertical-format work, Medsan stages a red dragon curled atop its vast treasure deep in an underground chamber, while a small hero ventures among the piles of gold — a direct homage to Smaug and Bilbo in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.
The treatment adopts the style of fantasy illustration and vintage posters: ornamental frame, patinated paper, finely drawn ink lines and gilded highlights. The scaly creature sleeps on a mountain of gold, gems, weapons and cups, beneath Gothic vaults lit by torches. Below, tiny and fearless, the thief advances with muted steps. The cartouche メドサン crowns the composition.
The work resurrects the universal archetype of the treasure-guarding dragon, a figure of greed and the initiatory test. The face-to-face of the sleeping behemoth and the small intruder embodies the courage of the weak before power, the beating heart of every great adventure. Medsan captures its epic breath and magic.
