Description from the seller

Atmospheric landscape – oil on panel – Émile Boulard (1861–1943), France, 19th century

This work, executed in oil on a solid wooden panel, was made by the French artist Émile Boulard, son and pupil of the renowned Barbizon painter Auguste Boulard.

The painting depicts an atmospheric, golden evening landscape in which a rider on a dirt road travels toward an idyllic village. In the background, the spire of a building or church tower is subtly visible against a soft, sun-drenched sky. With strong, impasto brushwork and a warm palette of ochre, deep brown, and subtle green tones, Boulard has masterfully captured the serene light of the “golden hour.” The influence of the Barbizon school and early impressionism is beautifully evident in this work.

The panel (unframed) is in good, authentic condition, the layers of paint are stable and the colors have retaining their warm intensity, but a simple light refreshment and a frame are desirable to bring the artwork fully back to its best presentation.

In any case, a beautiful late-Impressionist scene from the French landscape school, lower right correctly signed “Boulard.”
