AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Pair of Italian Mid-Century Sommerso Glass Bowls – Red, Orange and Clear Glass

Offered is an exceptional pair of heavy, sculptural glass bowls from the mid-century era.

The two identical bowls impress with their organic, flower- or shell-like shape and the intense color gradient of luminous red, orange and clear glass. The individual color layers are worked together in a plastically interwoven way and, through the interplay of transparent and opaque areas, create a particularly strong sense of depth.

The pieces show typical features of Italian Sommerso glass art and are stylistically attributed to Italian/Murano glass art of the 1960s/1970s. Comparable organically shaped Sommerso objects are credited, among others, to Flavio Poli, Seguso and Alessandro Mandruzzato. A definite manufacturer assignment is not possible for this pair, as both pieces are unsigned and bear no maker’s label.

The bowls are unusually massive, weighing about 1,110 g each. The bases are flat-ground and polished and show signs of use.

Whether originally used as decorative bowls, display bowls or for another purpose cannot be determined with certainty. The characteristic form, however, also corresponds to historical glass objects that were offered as ashtrays.
