Description from the seller

AUTHOR

Osvaldo Provvidone (1920 – 2013) Italian painter. Born in Novara, he was a visual artist capable of standing out in the Italian contemporary art scene through a continuous and passionate stylistic research. His training has roots in the fervent postwar season: he studied at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts of Turin, guided by two masters of such stature as Felice Casorati and Enrico Paolucci, choosing the latter as his direct guide. After teaching in Turin at the State Institute of Figures and Fashion (then directed by Italo Cremona) and, later, in high schools and technical institutes in his Novara, Provvidone fully embraced exhibition activity. Since the sixties he began to receive significant recognitions, among which the victory of the second prize for tempera at the I Roman Biennale of Contemporary Art in 1967 stands out.

From the point of view of poetics and technique, starting in the fifties Provvidone’s art underwent a decisive turn: the artist moved away from figurative rigor to an utopian exploration of abstract spatiality. His style is defined through a very personal painting of sign and gesture, often described by critics as a true “chromatic magma” sumptuous, capable of translating emotional interiority into vibrations on the canvas. Conceiving painting as a flow in a constant becoming, Provvidone alternated works of extreme delicacy and tonal refinement with creations characterized by a strong material resurge and irregular fields. His insatiable experimental drive led him to exceed the bounds of oil and tempera on canvas, exploring graphics, mixed techniques on cardboard, and extending to textile art and the integration of artworks into aesthetic-architectural contexts.

His works have been historicized, acquired or enhanced through exhibitions sponsored by institutions in his territory: the Municipality of Novara celebrated his legacy with notable exhibitions, such as the one hosted in the Salone dell’Arengo del Broletto in 2002 and the retrospectives at Spazio aperto all’Arte, cementing as a definite role his position as a vibrant and autonomous voice of Italian contemporary art.

DESCRIPTION

"Il Sofa' delle Musiche", oil on canvas, 100x60cm, 1978, signed bottom right. On the back, signature, title and date.

CONDITION REPORT

General condition good. The work is intact in every part with a vivid and legible chroma and brushwork.

The work presents itself as a fascinating abstract exploration in which the given reality is completely transfigured, freed from any figurative mimesis. As the title suggests, the subject seems to evoke a synesthetic dimension, an imaginary bed or an inner landscape on which echoes and sonic resonances rest. On the canvas, organic forms and irregular geometries crowd and nestle into and float over one another, suggesting a dense and welcoming spatiality in which music itself seems to take shape and volume, transforming into a tangible presence.

From a compositional and technical point of view, the painting visible in "Provvidone.jpg" is dominated by irregular fields that overlap in a dynamic and vibrant chromatic play. At the center of the canvas stands a masses of material in a vibrant, fleshy pink, crowned at the top by a luminous yellow form set in a forest green; around this radiant core rotate deep blues, earthy grays, lilac and hints of ochre. The brushwork is dense and quick, crisscrossed here and there by scratches and rapid marks incised into the fresh color, giving the whole a pulsing rhythm and almost musical.
It is in this strong “material resurge” that the vitality of the pictorial surface arises, where robust brushstrokes and dark outlines create a three-dimensional spatiality driven by a continuous emotional tension.

This canvas fits perfectly within Osvaldo Provvidone’s full stylistic maturity, coherently aligning with the path that since the fifties has seen him move away from the figurative rigor learned at the Albertina to arrive at an utopian exploration of abstract space. In "The Sofa of the Musics" this sign and gesture painting emerges clearly, which critics have happily defined as a "chromatic magma": the canvas becomes the stage of a flow in constant becoming, where the artist’s emotional interiority translates into pure vibrations. Through this synthesis of gestural energy, tonal sensitivity and experimental audacity, Provvidone confirms his role as a vibrant, autonomous and deeply original voice in the panorama of Italian contemporary art.

The photo of the painting set in an environment is generated with artificial intelligence, and should be considered purely exemplary. Only the remaining photos should be considered as accurate representations of the object and its features, both general and detail.
