Staller was born in 1880 in Amsterdam and lived and worked for almost his entire life in this city. He studied at the capital’s Rijksakademie and afterwards painted mainly Amsterdam cityscapes and scenes of the people in the Jewish quarter around Waterlooplein and the Jordaan. Staller was therefore known as the painter of Amsterdam’s Jewish popular life.

Beautifully detailed painting in which one can see the cigar smoke rising, a lying dog, a child who is reading, and the small berry glasses at the card table.
