Decorative ornament - Netherlands - Eastern gawker

This is a gaper, a traditional Dutch sign formerly hanging on the façade of a pharmacy or drugstore. The pictured figure is a historical bust of a gaper (often made of plaster or wood) with a distinctive turban and an outstretched tongue, which symbolized that medicines or a 'treat' (medicament) had to be taken. Gapers appeared from the late 16th and 17th centuries in the Dutch streetscape to make the building recognizable to the public.
