Description from the seller
Anatomical Tables
Jean-Adam Kulm
Amsterdam - 1734
Latin translation by P. Massuet
1st Edition in French
7 preliminary leaves; 227 pages of text; 3 preliminary leaves.
A volume in 8vo, full contemporary calfskin, in fair condition. Losses at the head and foot, corners, upper edges, and the beginning of a crack at the joints.
Manual of anatomy composed by Jean-Adam Kulm (Johann Adam Kulmus), physician active in the 18th century, pupil of Boerhaave and member of the Royal Prussian Academy.
A work of fairly limited availability.
The copy presents 17 folded plates at the end of the volume out of the 26 expected. Note that plates 16 and 17 are numbered on the same engraving as well as plates 22 and 23, and the Frontispiece is listed as plate 1. We therefore expect 28 figures numbered on 26 engravings.
Thus the missing plates are: 2, 13, 16/17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 27, 28.
Plates 9 and 26 are torn with minor losses, and the last plates are stained (photos).
It is interesting to note that part of plate 13 and plates 16/17 were probably reproduced long ago in ink on the back of adjacent plates of fairly good quality.
All engravings have suffered from creasing due to poor old folding, causing a bump of the folded engravings when the volume is closed.
The text block shows a single worm track, but it traverses the entire work and affects some engravings.
Copy with missing parts and in modest condition. The remaining iconography is aesthetically pleasing and a nice testimony to the anatomical knowledge of the era.
