Civil War original US Cavalry harness bridle with blinders, brass rosettes and bit, dating to 1860, made of leather, in good condition, authentic/official, about 19 inches tall.
Description from the seller
Civil War Original US Cavalry Harness Bridle with Blinders, Brass Rosettes, and Bit. Used by the US Cavalry throughout the war as part of the harnesses for horses pulling supply wagons in support of mounted fighting units, this bridle is historically significant and a valuable addition to any Civil War memorabilia collection.
The bridle has six buckles and four brass rosettes. The rosettes are in very good condition; the one on the right browband has a slight dent in it but no loss to the brass. Five of the six buckles appear as if they could be functional if used with care. The buckle on the throat latch is difficult to work, and I chose not to try when I put this bridle on one of our horses for photos. The stitching is solid, and the gentleman whose collection this came out of took very good care of the leather. It remains very supple with no cracking and could be used if desired. The bit is pitted and has a level of surface rust that should be cleaned if it is intended for use.
The condition of this historical piece makes it a rare find. Please review the photos carefully for a full perspective.
The bridle measures approx. 19 inches long from the crown to the connection with the snaffle bit. The brow band measures approx. 15 ¾ inches across. The blinders are approx. 5 ½ inches square. The bit is a 6-inch snaffle.
