About the artist:

Antoni Tàpies was born on 23 December 1923 in Barcelona. His love for art and literature became apparent early. During a long period of convalescence from a lung disease, Tàpies began to paint and draw. In 1944 he began studying law, which he abandoned in 1946 to devote himself to art full-time. Early paintings by Antoni Tàpies still orient themselves toward the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró. After a surrealist and Dadaist phase, his works became increasingly abstract. In 1947 the painting "Zoom" marked a programmatic work for his later oeuvre. In 1948, together with others, he founded the artist group "Dau al Set," in which he became the most important representative.

In 1950 Antoni Tàpies received a stipend from the French government, enabling him to stay in Paris. Also in 1950, the first solo exhibition took place in Barcelona. In 1951 Tàpies traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1953 he was briefly in New York, where an exhibition of his works took place. In 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale and thereby gained international recognition. He was represented at the documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977.

Antoni Tàpies was regarded as the most important representative of Spanish Informel. He mixed sand, cement, marble dust, and glue into his paintings. He scratched away paint and reapplied it until the surface resembled cracked masonry. Throughout his life, Tàpies engaged intensely with Eastern philosophies. In search of expression, he incorporated individual letters, signs, crosses, as well as objects or garments. Antoni Tàpies’ material- and wall-pictures appear mysterious and meditative. He himself did not describe himself as an abstract artist, but as a realist who tries to render reality comprehensible in his works. In 1984, Antoni Tàpies founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona. The artist passed away on February 6, 2012 in Barcelona.
