Mario Vellani Marchi trained at the Academy of Fine Arts of Modena, where he was a pupil of Giuseppe Graziosi and Pio Semeghini. From 1924 he participated in the Venice Biennale, returning to exhibit there in numerous subsequent editions. His research, initially linked to a classical approach, progressively developed toward a more personal and poetic language, also in relation to the environment of the so-called Burano School.

The work, dated 1947, depicts a composition of faces and belongs to a mature phase of the artist's production.
