The Eye of Memory
The Eye of Memory explores portraiture as a fragmented territory, where identity, perception, and memory are rebuilt through form. The face emerges from a succession of geometric planes that overlap and shift, moving away from conventional representation to become a presence constructed from multiple viewpoints.
The work is situated within a contemporary Cubist language. The geometrization of features, the rupture of perspective, and the coexistence of different planes transform the face into a visual architecture. The curved shapes soften this fragmentation and generate a rhythm that guides the gaze through the entire composition.
Color takes on a structural and emotional function. The various blues dominate the surface, imparting depth and serenity, while pinks, reds, and yellows introduce warm pulses that traverse the composition. The ochre and earthy areas, deliberately more material, contrast with the clean chromatic fields and suggest the erosion inherent to memory: that which remains sharp against that which time begins to transform.
The circular element placed beside the figure acts as the symbolic core of the work. It can be interpreted as an eye, a celestial body, a talisman, or a trace of an image preserved, becoming a metaphor for memory and its ability to observe even what we believe we have forgotten.
The Eye of Memory thus presents portraiture not as a reproduction of an appearance, but as a reconstruction of an interior experience. Remembering also means fragmenting, selecting, and reassembling, and it is precisely in that space between the lived and the remembered that the work finds its meaning.
