Those Who Look
Those Who Look explores the gaze as a territory of perception, awareness, and mystery. Two figures occupy the pictorial space from different positions, but their wide eyes establish a common tension: both observe, even though what they contemplate remains beyond our reach. The work thus inverts the usual relationship between portrait and spectator; in front of it, the inevitable sense arises that we are the ones being watched.
The composition is articulated through a contemporary cubist language, via the fragmentation of faces, the overlap of planes, and the breaking of a single perspective. The profiles cross, hide partially, and coexist in different orientations, building an image in which the same presence seems able to be contemplated from multiple viewpoints simultaneously.
Color intensifies this duality. Blues and turquoise create a deep, contemplative atmosphere, while oranges, yellows, and earth tones bring a warm energy that emerges from the interior of the figures. The white areas function as spaces of light and breath, making the eyes even more prominent within the composition.
The reiteration of the gaze also introduces a symbolic dimension. The eye ceases to be merely a physical trait and becomes a sign of vigilance, intuition, and knowledge. Each figure seems to observe from a different level, as if one attends to the visible world while the other perceives what remains hidden.
Those Who Look thus proposes a silent game between observer and observed. A work on perception and its limits, on the different ways of contemplating the same reality, and on that unsettling possibility that seeing does not always mean understanding.
