Description from the seller
Photographs form part of the description and a beautiful portrait of a boy from the fifties.
education
Kranenburg studied between 1938 and 1942 at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam under H. J. Jurres and W. H. van der Berg.
He made paintings, watercolors, etchings and lithographs of cityscapes, landscapes and portraits. He also created mural paintings, was a gifted sculptor, and played the piano excellently.
Arti en Amicitiae
He earned a prize for portrait painting and a grant from the Davidsfonds of Arti en Amicitiae in Amsterdam.
residence and studios
The painter Hendrik Cornelis Kranenburg has lived and worked in Amsterdam, Laren since 1943 and from 1962 in Bergen op Zoom.
palette
His rich color palette was very pronounced and the paint was applied directly to the canvas with swift brushstrokes. His landscapes show expansive skies with powerful cloud masses.
signature
His early work is recognizable by the outlining of the depicted contours and a signature in an italic typeface. The later work is characterized by a straighter signature and the absence of outlined contours.
oil paintings
He became best known for his oil paintings. The paint was laid thick on the canvas with broad brushstrokes, which often gave more than a one-dimensional impression. His style bore a strong resemblance to the painter W. G. F. Jansen, whom he greatly admired.
the Hague School
He painted in a fluent, impressionistic style in the manner of the Hague School. The grand cloud formations above the landscape or cityscape are a delight to the eye and also reveal the influence of the Hague School. He was an obsessive painter who produced a large body of work.
H. C. Kranenburg died on January 31, 1997.
He was eighty years old.
