Description from the seller
Beautiful majolica asparagus dish, Orchies, Majolica plate asparagus, circa 1880
Asparagus dish in Barbotine decorated with 6 asparagus in high relief in the central part, surrounded by foliage and a braided blue texture on the rim outlined by a festooned green edge.
The center of the dish, represented by two hollow asparagus, is the central well for placing the sauce.
Unmarked but referenced to the Orchies faience manufactory in northern France.
Brilliant enamel, no cracks or chips,
Enamel crazing and patina as often seen on these majolica pieces, a sign of authenticity and age
Dimensions: length 36 cm, width 26 cm, height 4.5 cm
The French faience manufactory of Orchies was created in 1879 by L'Herminé near the Belgian border, where many other faience companies had been established since the 18th century. The Orchies Manufacture created numerous decorative pieces highlighted with vivid colours. The company was absorbed by Moulin-des-Loups Hamage in 1923 and, despite a revival in the 1950s, it finally closed its doors in the 1980s.
Plate reproduced in Maryse Botero's book, Artichauts et Asperges en barbotine.
