Pair of two alabaster bookends featuring hand-carved elephants, vintage dating to circa 1960–1970, in honey yellow, cream and brown tones, each with a rectangular base and vertical rear support and approximately 10 cm high, 10 cm wide and 5 cm deep; good vintage condition with minor age-related marks.
Description from the seller
Elegant vintage pair of decorative bookends, consisting of two sculptures depicting elephants, one for each side. The animals are finely hand-carved and feature a natural coloration in honey yellow, cream and brown tones, with veins and shading variations that make each piece unique.
The sculptures are mounted on solid rectangular bases with a vertical rear element, designed to support books. The handcrafted details are particularly visible in the ears, trunks, legs and the surface of the body.
The material appears to be a natural decorative stone, plausibly alabaster, onyx or an ornamental limestone; from photographs alone it is not possible to determine with absolute certainty the mineral variety. The polished surface highlights the beautiful natural veining of the material.
Style: Vintage / ethnic / exotic, with colonial inspiration
Period: Second half of the 20th century, approximately 1960–1980
Material: Carved and polished natural stone
Colour: Honey yellow, cream, beige and brown tones
Quantity: 2 bookends, sold as a pair
Use: Functional bookends and decorative objects for a library, study, office or bookshelf.
Condition
Good overall vintage condition, with normal signs of age, small imperfections, colour variations and minor surface marks visible in the photographs. Some small spots and imperfections are characteristic of the natural material and handcrafted workmanship. Please carefully examine all photographs, which form an integral part of the description.
A charming and unusual pair, ideal for a classic library, vintage interior or collection of ethnic and antique decorative objects.
Measurements
According to the photographs with the measuring tape, the base of each bookend is approximately 13–14 cm long. Please refer to the measuring photographs for the dimensions shown.
Note: the material has been identified only according to its visible characteristics; a specific type of stone is not claimed without professional mineralogical analysis.
