Description from the seller
Orientalist Watercolor – Marcel Blairat (1849-1891) – “The Oued Boudouaou, Algeria”
Original from the late 19th century, executed by the renowned French Orientalist painter Marcel Blairat.
The work depicts a lively and peaceful scene by the water’s edge, featuring several figures in traditional attire (including draped figures) in a riverside landscape with sandy banks lined with palm trees.
Artist: Marcel Blairat (1849-1891), famous French Orientalist painter known for his landscapes of North Africa, who exhibited at the Paris Salon as early as 1877.
Medium: Original watercolor on textured heavy paper stock.
Historical mounting: The watercolor sheet remained independent from its central board; it is affixed to its brown support board by round vintage mounting tacks along the back edges.
Signature: Signed “M. Blairat” in the artist’s hand at the lower left. The back of the board also bears a second handwritten signature used by the artist in pencil (“MBlairat”) in the upper left corner.
Period inscriptions and Provenance: The back of the rigid board bears precious handwritten workshop annotations from a period framing shop dated October 16, 1897 (“16/10 97”). The instructions of the era are clearly legible: “all the margin to be seen of the watercolor” as well as the choice of moulding “M. L. oak and gold.” The lower right corner indicates the precise topographic location: “10 / the Ou(ed) Boudouaou / Algeria.”
Dimensions: 32 x 23 cm
This historical watercolor, full of charm and authenticity, would deserve to be set in a nice frame (for example with a mount to protect its original margins). It will perfectly enhance your interior and add a touch of timeless Orientalist elegance to the piece that houses it.
Condition report:
The watercolor itself is in very good condition with bright, original colors.
Recto: Presence of a period moisture halo (old damp stain) localized only on the left-hand margin of the sheet. This aging mark remains at the edge and does not affect the central composition or the signature. Light handling traces from the period are visible on the top edge of the sheet.
Verso (Support): The backboard shows signs of wear associated with its great age, including surface creases, fracture lines, rubbed/beveled corners with slight losses of superficial material on the corners, and old humidity rings.
These normal use elements do not alter the front’s integrity and attest to its historical authenticity.
Shipping will be undertaken with great care. The work will be optimally protected in a rigid and secure packaging to guarantee its perfect integrity until delivery. A tracking number will be provided to you upon shipment.
