【Product details】

A 19th-century Japanese cast-iron tea kettle (chagama) in the distinctive hagama form, accompanied by a copper lid. This type of kettle is characterised by the broad projecting flange, known as a hane (wing), extending around the body and giving the vessel its recognisable silhouette.

The iron body is decorated with multiple horizontal bands filled with finely textured, comb-like incised patterns. The slightly irregular outline of the broad flange and the substantial rounded lower body give the kettle a strong, rustic character, while the two side lugs were intended for handling the kettle with appropriate fittings.

The contrasting copper lid is fitted with an elegant bud-shaped finial. Its warm brown patina provides an attractive visual contrast with the dark, aged surface of the cast iron. Together, the iron body and copper lid reflect the restrained combination of functional form and decorative detail traditionally associated with Japanese tea utensils.

The kettle shows considerable age-related rust and oxidation both inside and outside, particularly across the underside, together with surface wear, minor scratches and general soiling consistent with its age. A water-leak test has been carried out and no leakage was detected at the time of testing. Please refer carefully to the photographs for the detailed condition.
