Born in 1881 in Montfort-sur-Risle, René Sautin belongs to that generation of Norman painters who knew how to make their native land a true laboratory of light and modernity. Trained at the Rouen Fine Arts School in the workshop of Philippe Zacharie, then in Paris with Gabriel Ferrier, he received early encouragement from Albert Lebourg, a fellow and major figure of Norman Impressionism. Settling in Les Andelys from 1911, Sautin finds on the banks of the Seine his most intimate space of inspiration: Château-Gaillard, the quays of Petit-Andely, the barges gliding on the water… Each motif that he revisits tirelessly, with a vibrant sensibility and a singular expressive force. He then mingled with the circle of Pissarro, Signac, Luce, Derain or Lebasque, who came to paint in the region — a bustling artistic circle that fed his stylistic evolution.

Around 1923, Sautin abandoned Impressionist technique to assert a calm and reasoned Fauvism, made of bold colors, generous texture, and definitive brushstrokes. “To paint is to spread pâte,” he used to say, claiming a powerful, sensual painting, deeply incarnate. This stylistic maturity, reached as early as the 1920s, fully blossomed in the 1950s, when his work gained intensity and monumentality.

Proud, sensitive artist, sometimes misunderstood in his own time, René Sautin leaves today a body of work of great coherence, where Normandy appears transfigured by color and emotion. His landscapes, of rare strength, bear witness to a deeply personal vision — a vision that continues to move collectors and art lovers.
