A pair of Balinese hand-carved wooden bookends in the style of a Candi Bentar, dating from circa 1970–1980, made in Indonesia, with dimensions about 21 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep, in good used condition with minor signs of age and spots.

Beautiful decorative hand-carved Balinese bookend. Bali, Indonesia, circa 1970-1980.
The pair is designed in the style of a Candi Bentar (the iconic split gate temple entrance from Bali, Indonesia).
Features of the object: Architecture: The woodcarving imitates the layered structure of a traditional Balinese temple gate or gapura.
Symbolism: In Balinese culture, the split gate marks the transition from the outside world to a sacred, serene space.
Details: The woodcarving features refined patterns and a central carved figure (often a guardian or mythological figure) that symbolically protects the gate.
Wood type: Such objects are traditionally handmade in Indonesia from woods such as suar wood or teak.
Dimensions: about 21 cm high and 12 cm wide.
