Decorative circular slate plate from St. Moritz, Engadine, Switzerland, dating to circa 1930–1960, with a sgraffito deer scene, 30.5 cm in diameter and 3 cm thick, black and grey, inscribed “ST. MORITZ”, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
Decorative plaque from St. Moritz, Switzerland, with a scene of deer – sgraffito technique.
Switzerland. 1930-60.
Circular decorative plate of Alpine tradition, originating from St. Moritz in the Engadine region (Switzerland). It features a composition with three deer, two of them with impressive antlers and another resting, on a rocky promontory beside a tree.
The decoration is executed using the traditional sgraffito technique, consisting of scraping a dark surface to reveal the lower grayish layer, creating the drawing through the contrast between the two surfaces. This technique is especially characteristic of the architecture and traditional crafts of the Engadine.
The piece bears the inscription “ST. MORITZ” integrated into the composition. Given its characteristics, it probably corresponds to a decorative object or high-quality tourist souvenir intended for visitors to the well-known Swiss Alpine resort during the 20th century. It can be used as a wall decoration element, display piece, or Alpine/chalet-style decoration.
