Description from the seller
AFRICAN OASIS
100 × 70 cm
Acrylic on canvas · 2026
African Oasis presents an intimate courtyard organized around a circular pool that occupies much of the foreground. The white architecture, articulated by a succession of arches, envelops the space and guides the gaze toward an interior in shadow. A large trunk runs vertically through the composition, while clusters of plants and terracotta vessels introduce different volumes of vegetation. On the water, fragmented reflections reproduce the whites, blues, greens, and oranges of the surroundings.
The composition is built from the contrast between the luminosity of the walls and the deep blue shadows projected onto them. The warm tones of the vessels, the trunk, and the edge of the pool balance a palette dominated by blues and greens, creating an intense relationship between architecture, vegetation, and water. The succession of arches and the curved surface of the pool add rhythm and depth, turning the courtyard into a protected space set apart from the exterior.
PROJECTION AND VALUE OF THE WORK
African Oasis is part of Mar Legón’s research on courtyards, gardens, and architectures conceived as refuges and contemplative spaces. In this piece, the artist incorporates references to North African and Mediterranean architecture to build a setting in which arches, water, vegetation, and shaded areas all take equal prominence.
Made entirely by hand in 2026, this unique piece gathers some of the most characteristic elements of her recent production: a vibrant color palette, synthesized forms, strong lighting contrasts, and a spatial construction based on the layering of planes. The work offers a contemporary interpretation of the oasis as a place of shelter, coolness, and quiet, translating this idea to the intimate scale of a domestic courtyard.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mar Legón develops a painting practice focused on reinterpreting landscapes, interiors, still lifes, and figurative scenes through a visual language based on color, formal synthesis, and the building of atmospheres.
Her work transforms recognizable spaces and motifs into images of strong visual intensity, where reality is simplified and reorganized to give rise to scenes that oscillate between memory, imagination, and contemplation.
