AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Very pretty ancient traditional basket from Southeast Asia, most likely originating from Palawan Island, in the Philippines, handcrafted in bamboo, rattan, and other plant fibers.

Its construction shows strong similarities with the basketry traditions of Palawan’s indigenous populations: a body that is very finely woven, reinforced outer framework, structured base, and especially a wide cylindrical collar made of vegetal strips, a feature particularly characteristic and remarkable of this piece.

The trail of tingkop / tingkäp baskets, traditionally associated with the Pala'wan, is particularly interesting. Their manufacture relies on the use of bamboo, rattan, and various plant fibers, with an elaborate construction combining a woven body, frame, base, and edging.

Because the precise attribution to a ethnic group cannot be established with certainty, the object is presented as probably originating from Palawan, with a strong stylistic affinity to the Pala'wan tingkop tradition.

The basket shows a very beautiful dark brown patina, acquired over time and use, which highlights the finesse of the weaving and the different elements of its construction. It retains its ties/straps and its long shoulder strap.
