Sokaina Bouzagane Kaddouri - Blackwave

SBK – Blackwave XL is a large, three-dimensional abstract artwork (140 × 70 cm), created on unframed canvas using mixed-media techniques that bring volume, movement, texture, and depth to the composition.

The relief is sculpted by hand directly onto the canvas using plaster, creating the different raised forms and textures that shape the wave across the surface. The material is carefully worked to build the volume and movement of the composition while preserving an irregular and expressive finish.

Once the relief has been completed and dried, the artwork is painted using a combination of acrylic paint and spray paint. Deep black and charcoal tones dominate the composition, enhancing the shadows, textures, and different levels of the sculpted surface.

A layer of resin is then applied using a water-based technique, creating fluid patterns and glossy areas across the artwork. This process introduces reflections and variations in the surface that interact with light, reinforcing the visual effect of water and giving the piece greater depth and movement.

The composition is inspired by the strength and movement of ocean waves, interpreted through an abstract and contemporary approach. The contrast between the sculpted plaster relief, deep black tones, and reflective resin creates a powerful visual effect that changes depending on the light and viewing angle.

The entire creative process is carried out by hand in the artist’s studio, making SBK – Blackwave XL a unique and individually crafted piece.
