Portrait of a Gypsy, oil on panel, Europe, original attributed to Isidre Nonell i Monturiol (1872–1911), dating from 1900–1910, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Title: Portrait of a Gypsy Woman
School: Catalan, 20th century
Author: Attributed to Isidre Nonell i Monturiol (1872–1911)
Style: Catalan Modernism with post-impressionist and expressionist traits
Technique: Oil on panel
Circle and artistic influences:
Work linked to the Barcelonese Modernist circle and to the pictorial language developed by Isidre Nonell. The depiction of a Romani woman, the intense palette of ochres, the simplification of volumes, and the pronounced dark outlines bear affinity with his early 20th‑century production. The influence of Post-Impressionism and European Expressionist currents is also perceptible, especially in the emotional treatment of the face and in the energetic brushwork.
About the author:
Isidre Nonell i Monturiol was one of the fundamental figures of the second generation of Catalan Modernism. He was part of the Colla del Safrà, frequented the Els Quatre Gats artistic circle, and traveled to Paris in 1897 with Ricard Canals. He developed a deeply personal painting, with an expressive tendency and a usually dark palette, often focusing on socially marginalized subjects, especially Romani women.
Half‑length female portrait shown in profile, with the face oriented to the right. The model appears with black hair gathered in a large bun and a serious, introspective expression. The painter builds the figure with dark outlines and broad, vigorous brushstrokes.
The skin is resolved with intense ochre, orange, and earthy tones that contrast with the dark mass of the hair. The background, sober and diffused, consists of browns and grays that concentrate all attention on the figure. The attire is suggested with greenish, beige, and black tones, applied with free and expressive execution.
In the upper left, there is an inscription or possible signature. Because it is catalogued as a work attributed to, the attribution will need to be confirmed through the corresponding specialized study.
Presented with a wide molded frame, finished in gold and aged bronze tones. It incorporates dark inner profiles and discreet linear ornamentation. It bears patina, wear, and small losses typical of its age.
Measurements:
With frame: 77.5 × 67 cm.
Without frame: 65 × 54.5 cm.
Notes:
The work may sustain damage during transport even with proper packing. In that case, we will require photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. The satisfaction of the customer is always our priority.
Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge for reasons such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions, or weight of the item. PremiArt will in no case cover this surcharge.
