Description:
This elegant Japanese bamboo flower vase (hanakago) was made by Chikusen (竹泉) and displays refined basketry workmanship combined with a sculptural bottle-shaped form.
The vase has a broad, rounded body that gradually narrows into a long neck, creating a graceful silhouette reminiscent of an old sake flask. Its exterior is constructed from finely split bamboo, carefully woven in dense horizontal courses and strengthened by broader vertical ribs. Around the shoulder, the weaving becomes progressively tighter, emphasizing the transition from the generous body to the slender neck.
The bamboo has developed a beautiful deep amber to dark brown patina, with natural variations in tone that highlight the individual strips and the complexity of the weave. The restrained decoration allows the material itself—its grain, nodes, color, and texture—to become the principal visual element.
A small bamboo stopper or fitting, attached by a cord near the neck, forms part of the original design. The vase is also accompanied by a removable black cylindrical inner liner, allowing fresh flowers and water to be placed inside without direct contact with the woven bamboo body.
The underside is particularly finely constructed, with the bamboo strips arranged concentrically around the center and reinforced by structural bands. A small dark bamboo plaque on the base bears a red inscription reading 竹泉 (Chikusen), identifying the maker.
Combining functionality with highly accomplished bamboo craftsmanship, the vase reflects the Japanese appreciation for natural materials, subtle asymmetry, and the beauty that develops through age and handling. Its warm patina and sophisticated woven structure make it equally suitable as an ikebana flower vessel or as a decorative object in its own right.
