Inmaculada Concepción - XL format, an oil painting attributed to a Spanish school (18th century) from Spain, depicting the Immaculate Conception in Sevillian iconography; unsigned, framed, needs restoration, 148 × 95 cm.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This Immaculate responds clearly to the Sevillian iconographic type derived from Murillo: crossed hands over the chest (a less frequent variant than hands joined in prayer, but also used by Murillo and his circle), loose and wavy hair, green mantle over a white tunic, a crescent moon beneath the feet, and the procession of angel children bearing the Marian attributes of the Lauretan Litany: palm, rose, mirror (speculum sine macula), and a white lily.

Some notes to guide (but not confirm) the attribution:
• Sevillian school, 17th-18th centuries: the compositional scheme, the palette (dark greens, warm whites, touches of red) and the soft, somewhat idealized treatment of the face are typical of workshops that replicated Murillian models for decades after the master’s death (1682).
• It does not appear to be Murillo’s autograph: the drawing of the hands, the faces of the angels, and a certain rigidity in the drapery suggest a follower, workshop pupil, or copyist more than the hand of Murillo himself."
