With this vertical-format work, Medsan sets Doraemon, the 22nd-century robotic cat imagined by Fujiko F. Fujio, in motion as a patinated metal statue completely covered in graffiti. The absolute icon of manga and Japanese animation leaves its panels to become an urban monument, like a public sculpture tagged on a night of fugue. The mashup makes Nipponese pop culture—tenderest—and New York writing culture dialogue, from calligraphic tagging to 1980s throw-ups.

The treatment leans into workshop hyperrealism: the slate-blue surface is built with glazes and short impastos, peppered with corrosion pinpricks, orange-oxide drips, and rivets that give the character a riveted sheet-metal body. The letterings are applied with spray can and marker — chrome silver, bright red, primary yellow, electric blue — and hug the spherical volumes of the skull and belly as if on a car body. The absolute black background isolates the silhouette like a shadowy portrait, while the golden brass bell, the only warm accent, locks the center of the composition.

The inscriptions are not decorative: POCKET, ANY DOOR, DORAYAKI, 22ND, NO EARS, GADGET, BLUE COPTER, FRIEND, the kanji 未来 ("future"), and this "HELP ME" written in red compose the character’s intimate inventory. The robot who granted every wish appears here rusty, abandoned, covered with the words of those who loved him—the promised future has become a ruin that the street has claimed. The tenderness of childhood drawing collides with vandal memory: it is as much a votive offering as graffiti.

A piece that is at once iconic and melancholic, ideal for bringing a pop urban and Japanese touch to a contemporary interior, loft, or a collector’s office devoted to the bridges between manga, street art, and sculpture.
