Description from the seller

THERE IS ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD - EDITION 1/1

With this vertically oriented work, Medsan brings forth Articuno — フリーザー, the legendary ice bird of the first generation Pokémon — above a mountain hamlet buried in snow. The composition directly cites Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e printmaking, particularly the nocturnal snow from the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, where travelers bent under their straw hats cross the storm. The red cartouche 雪の精, “the spirit of the snow,” gives the pocket monster the status of an ancestral yōkai.

The treatment reclaims the grammar of Japanese woodblock printing: soft black outlines, flat areas with no shading, bokashi gradients in the indigo sky, and above all that deep Prussian blue of the aizuri-e of the 19th century. The snow is not painted but reserved in the white of the paper, a printmaking technique that gives the flakes and roofs their pale, matte gleam. The bird’s trail unfurls into wavy ribbons that become the storm itself, a direct echo of Hiroshige’s stylized rain lines. The aged paper grain, the dark edge margin, the calligraphic signature, and the vermilion seal at the bottom right complete the illusion of an old-era print.

The mashup says one simple, fair thing: the modern legendary creature reacquires the function of the traditional monster—explaining the climate, embodying winter, scaring, and protecting at once. The villagers do not lift their heads, busy returning before nightfall, and this detail grounds the legend in daily life rather than in the spectacular. Two mythologies, one two centuries old and the other born in the 1990s, recognize themselves as the same way of naming what surpasses us.

A contemplative and graphic piece, ideal for bringing a touch of contemporary Japanese printmaking to a collector’s interior who is attached as much to pop culture as to art history.

About the Studio:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists gathered around a living and plural contemporary creation. Set up as a true artistic production space, the studio operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on the projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. Alongside him, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo pursues a more instinctive research, blending abstract art, raw art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
