With this vertically formatted work, Medsan brings photographic double exposure into the vocabulary of Japanese sumi-e. The upright wolf, jaws raised to the sky, is not painted: it is cut from a forest of snowy birches traversed by an aurora borealis. The howling animal silhouette evokes the long tradition of wolves in printmaking, from Ōkami to the ōkami-shinkō of the mountain shrines, while the layout — isolated subject, vast reserve of paper — mirrors the breathing of classic ink wash.

The treatment is an ink-and-watercolor wash on textured paper, with deep blacks laid down with a dry brush for the coat and ink splashes on the periphery that keep the gesture’s trace. Inside the body, the palette shifts toward turquoise, lavender, and Prussian blue: dappled birch trunks in white reserve, an icy stream, a tiny crescent moon in the nape’s hollow. The paws and the snow-covered rock in the foreground return to pure ink, anchoring the animal in the snow with a few bold strokes in the sumi-e style.

The mashup says one thing, and it says it well: the animal does not inhabit the territory; it is made from it. The howl becomes a call of the forest itself, and the aurora housed in the wolf’s chest transforms the predator into a receptacle of the wild world. It is as much an image of disappearance as of power — the beast still stands, yet the landscape is already seen through it.

A contemplative and graphic piece, ideal for bringing a touch of wilderness and Nordic silence into the home of a collector sensitive to Japanese prints as well as contemporary animal art.
